In the wake of the article saying Steve Phillips wanted to trade David Wright for Jose Cruz, Jr., I'm starting this thread where we all own up to our stupid trade/Free Agent signing ideas.

I'll start.

I wanted to sign Brian Jordan to play RF ifor us in 2004 because he could hit lefties. He signed with Texas and went on to post a .275 OBP in 61 games in 2004, then a .295 OBP in 76 games in Atlanta in 2005.

I wanted the Mets to get Matt Clement. (well not incredibly stupid)
I hated the Pornstache pickup.
I liked the Juan Samuel deal (but back then I didn't know shit).

I'll see if I can think of others, but I'm sure I've conveniently blacked them out of my memory.

In 04 I wanted to sign both Carl Pavano and Matt Clement instead of Pedro.

05 Pavano - 4.77 era 1.47 whip .315 ba
06 Pavano - crippled
05 Clement - 4.57 era 1.36 whip .260 ba
06 Clement - 6.61 era 1.76 whip .291 ba (and hurt)

I've never had a stupid idea. Cool

EDIT: I wanted Alomar to be given another chance.

Not too many trade ideas, but I'm pretty much a dumbass in every other regard:

I like Armando Benitez and wanted him to stay, (I dunno if that's dumb, but definitely controversial,)

I picked the Astros to sweep last years' World Series.

I was pumped when we got Mo Vaughn.

....and Bobby Bonilla (the second time).

Yea, but now that Magglio is healthy he doesn't seem like such a bad signing. I wanted the Mets to get him and also Juan Gone in '02 I think.

I wanted the Mets to let Piazza walk after the '98 season and hold onto the recovering Todd Hundley as our catcher.

I will never, ever, live that one down.

I don't think you can consider yourself stupid for loving the Alomar deal. He had just come off one of his best seasons ever.

Where do I start?

I was a big fan of the Kaz Matsui signing. I got caught up in the hoopla when I saw a bunch of scouting reports saying he was better than Ichiro.

I thought the Alomar trade was great at the time.

I despised the Pornstache, which I now grew to love

I wasn't that pissed when I heard we traded Jesus for Zambrano. Of course I was under the impression it was Carlos Zambrano.

I hated the Duaner Sanchez for Jae Seo trade. I didn't understand how filthy and dirty Sanchez was at the time. (thank you juxtaposition)

I didn't mind the Mo Vaughn trade partly because of the cornucopia of jokes that came our way.

I wanted Carl Pavano, too. Big time.

When Omar started pimping Pedro, I was like, hmmmmmmm. Kinda cool to the idea. But when Omar started talking about using the Pedro signing to help make the Mets Número Uno for young latin players, I was all for it.

On a side note, I almost cried the day David Cone got traded.

He was by far my favorite Met at the time.

I wouldn't say wanting to keep Benitez instead of getting Royce Ring was stupid. Everyone would have taken Benitez that following year over Looper.
