I think 2 months is plenty of time for somebody, Owens, or another to step up and solidy the 7th spot as well as Hernandez is going to do or better. And thus keeping our OF depth and bench intact. We could of then revisted the trade since we knew it was an option, in the off season if they were really big on getting Perez.

Well in that case someone would HAVE to step up. But really who is that guy? Owens doesn't seem like it because his fastball is too straight, and Maine and Pelfrey should not be turned into relievers. Lima? Iriki? etc. Chance of failure is pretty high.

Secondly, in the off-season there is no reason for that trade, because Hernandez isn't needed then. He is needed between now and October.

Owens, Maine, Bannister, Pelfrey, El Duque, Ring...between pen arms and surplus in SP the position could of been filled. Come now there was plenty of time before the meaningfull post season games for somebody to step up. You already know El duque can pitch out of the pen.

Yes in the off season that exact trade would not be needed to be made, however if they were high on Perez they could of revisted trade talks then since they new he was available.

It's not the worse trade in the world just personally i think it was more knee jerk because of the Sanchez situation but i feel it wasn't a necessary knee jerk.

Do you know what I just realized? This trade gives us room for re-signing Floyd. Milledge will start in RF and retain a good mentor for him. Black baseball players gotta stick together.

Here come 20 people with delusions of grandeur who think we can sign Carlos Lee... There has to be 14 other teams with enough room to acquire Lee, if Texas doesn't find a way to re-sign him.

One thing I do raise an issue with however is Hernandez' value. I'm not sure if he really is much of an upgrade over what the mets could otherwise throw out there. Sure, he has a good ERA this year but I believe that his 1.6something WHIP shows that he's been very lucky about giving up runs. The law of averages is bound to catch up.

That is totally fair, and both of you might 100% correct in the end. To me I think the Hernandez pick up is an insurance policy, i.e. a known entity to the org that is safer to go to than trying a bunch of converted starters or lefty specialists that have never been in those kind of big-stage NYC situations.

But here's my real bias: I love getting Perez. I know he's a mechanical mess, I know he hasn't been (consistently) good in 1.5 years, but his talent in my eyes makes Hernandez a complete afterthought. Sure you reference back that he has been good in awhile, but you also have to remember that he is 24, and at 24 he's still awhile away from his prime, and would still be considered a prospect had he never made it to the bigs.

The reason I'm so intoxicated by this is because his struggles genuinely do not seem to be health related, they are mechanical. And we've got a pitching coach that specializes in addressing mechanical problems. If Perez has a 10% chance of "regaining it", maybe Peterson raises that chance to 25%. In my mind that makes it worth the gamble, because Perez "regaining it" means we have a 20-something ace. That is potential that Nady can't come close to. Potential on par with Nady's can be picked off fairly randomly in the off-season (see Gary Matthews Jr. as an example).

Minaya has been targeting Perez for awhile based on misc. rumors, but my guess is that he wouldn't go after him at the time because the high-risk made it difficult to validate a straight-up trade. The timing happened to work out well enough that Perez become the 'throw-in', when in reality he was likely the primary.

what is perez like ??? anyone have any information on him?

His stuff is FILTHY, but he's a lot like Victor Zambrano in that he can't throw it over the plate. As recently as 2004, he put up a 2.98 ERA with 239 strikeouts in in 196 IP. If Peterson can straighten his mechanics out, this is an absolute steal for the Mets.

If, if, if. If "if's" and "buts" were candy and nuts...
