Wow, what an abortion of a column. Not only is his opinion idiotic, but he has numerous facts wrong in the article.

The name of the doctor is JAMES Andrews, not Frank Andrews.

How are the Mets screwing over the politicians and people of NY when Wilpon is paying for most of the stadium with private funding?

I think everyone's already covered enough how wrong his opinion is.

I'll pile on with one more reason the article stinks. His premiss is that the Mets are ebing cheap and going for 1 or 2 year deal with the lesser priced FAs, and most people here have posted that that is correct and good because - rightly so - the Mets won't be burdened by overpriced unmovable contracts when these mediocre FAs start to falter.

However, Wallace misses the point that the Mets WILL spend for what they percieve as quality, and they'll spend big.

Evidence you ask?

Oh...how about bidding $38M....yes that is a 38 with 6 fat zeros after it...for one Daisuke Matsuzaka.

I know you have to sell papers Wallace, but come on be real.

totally agree. You think the Mets, let alone the Yankees thought the Red Sox would pony up $51 million for that...hell noo. I heard many times after the announcement that the Mets thought they had the highest number.

What the hell kind of agenda do you have to have to produce [CENSORED] like this?

Omar has ponied up for the guys he wanted badly: Pedro/Beltran/Wagner

He's made trades that people questioned in terms of the players we were giving away: Delgado/LoDuca/Perez/Sanchez

He's pulled gems out of his ass: RoboHern/Porny/Chavez/Bradford

The guy is doing an absolutely PERFECT job of building the ballclub.

If Carl Crawford were a free agent this year and we were not willing to open up the wallet, I'd be pissed. But when you have Soriano, Lee and Alou as the 3 best LF on the market, how could you not be happy to walk away with the one that has the best career production (instead of the guys that suddenly became great in a contract year) while giving them half the annual salary and 6-7 fewer years.

When those are your options, you patch the hole until you can fill it internally or until a better FA/Trade opportunity comes up.

What if we'd signed Soriano and then all of a sudden Crawford was realistically available at the break next year?

And for what it's worth, I'd much rather be in this position than be a Dodgers fan and know that we just signed Pierre for 5 years and blocked the path for Ethier and/or Kemp.

And which one of these guys are an everyday position player?

Milledge.....good luck
Pelfrey....unknown
Humber.....unknown
Vargas with his [CENSORED] can era
Maine cant get out of the 4th
Perez with his [CENSORED] can era
Bannister coming off injury
Sanchez coming off injury
Heilman....Will he even be here?
Chavez.....will he spot play again next year??

so let me see if I have this straight. you are basically going to write off every single one of these guys, ignoring their age, and talent and/or minor league success? give me a break. might as well write off gomez, neise, guerra, fernando, mulvey, soler, carp........

so all we need is young established talent at every postion. that totally realistic. and by realistic I mean impossible.

It's obvious, he wants us to the be the Yankees, and then he can rip us mercifully when we do become the Yankees

I'm sorry, did he want the Mets to sign Matthews Jr at 10 mil per? Or Soriano who will NOT give 7 years of top production and will be an unmovable albatross in the later years of that deal? Nah, I see those deals and the Alou move is fine by me. And that means the Mets will be free to sign a guy like Vernon Wells (for an example) next year while the Cubs and Angels are stuck with their pigs in a poke. I'm not happy about [CENSORED] at 2B either but I'm very sure that Omar will bring in someone else like a Loretta (would make me extremely happy)

It's not like the Mets passed on top player FAs.........it's a real weak crop. Let the idiots spend on mediocre talent like Steve Phillips back in the day
