The Dreidel is used as a remembrance of the 8 days of light from the one day of oil. The words on the dreidel mean "A great miracle happened there"

It's used by children as a betting game, one side, Nun, means do nothing, then Gimel means take the whole pot, the next, He, means take half the pot, then Shin means put one in the pot. It's usually played with Hanukkah Gelt, the little gold wrapped chocolate coins.
