Cuban star Gourriel has no interest in deserting

By Enrique Rojas
ESPNdeportes.com

At 22 and already with an impressive resume in local and international events. Cuban infielder Yulieski Gourriel is considered one of the world's best baseball players.

And as with other Cuban greats since Fidel Castro outlawed professional sports 40 years ago, success for Gourriel has been accompanied by rumors of desertion when his country participates in international events.

The Central American and Caribbean Games, which concluded Sunday in Colombia, were no exception.

There were several reports coming from Colombia and elsewhere that Gourriel, who homered in Cuba's championship victory over the Dominican Republic, had left the Cuban team and asked for political asylum in the U.S. in order to play professional ball. One Colombian newspaper even reported that Gourriel had reached a preliminary agreement with the New York Yankees.

"I laughed when I saw those reports, because I was home as soon as we finished playing," Gourriel told ESPNdeportes.com via telephone from his home in Sancti Spiritus in southeast Cuba.

Since he joined the national team in 2003, Gourriel has been on the radar screen of scouts, and the subject of rumors that always surround the Cuban team.

"I'm only interested in playing ball, that's what I concentrate on," said Gourriel. "If I paid attention to all the other things, I wouldn't play as well ... that's what I'm here for, to play for my country."

Since Gourriel has been on the national team, Cuba has won an Olympic gold medal in 2004 in Athens, in addition to gold in the 2003 Pan American Games, the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games, and the 2003 and 2005 World Championships.

In March, Cuba finished second in the World Baseball Classic, the first international event that included established major-league players. Cuba defeated teams with some of the best players in the world, including the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Venezuela, before losing the championship game to Japan.

"My goal is to win every tournament in which Cuba plays, especially the 2008 Olympics and the World Classic in 2009," said Gourriel, who hit .273 with two home runs and six RBI in the WBC.

Why is Gourriel so highly sought? The guy can hit.

In the last Cuban League regular season, Gourriel led the league in home runs (27) and RBI (92) in a 90-game season playing for Spiritus Sancti. He also had 19 doubles, 11 triples, 21 stolen bases and 51 walks in 349 plate appearances. The previous season, he hit 23 home runs and drove in 83.

With his bat and a solid glove at both third and second base, Gourriel would command millions as a professional in the U.S.

"My commitment is to my family, which has guided me since I was little, and the revolution, which has guaranteed me everything I've needed to become a ballplayer," he said. "That's all I need as a person. ... I have definite convictions."

Gourriel just wants to be mentioned in the same breath as other Cuban greats on the island, such as Omar Linares, Antonio Pacheco and Oreste Kindelan.

"I want people to recognize me as one of the best Cuban players of all time, although that won't be easy, with all of the great players we've had here," he said.

There was a rumor that he would defect, and thts why omar signed Pena the scout from the tigers cuz he has juice inside cuba. there is an 18 or 19 yr old kid in cuba who some say is the cuban version of fernando

"The Yanks have also agreed to hold contract discussions with first baseman Seung-Yeop Lee (30 year old, lefty, with the Yomiuri Giants 1B and Korea's 1B in the WBC)."

OK here is some news on the ifa's that i got boras is freezing out the mets cuz word got to him that the mets took edge out of trade discussions with oakland for zito when zito made him his agent.
balino is currently trying to get offers that are better than the 350k deal the mets have put in the table he wants 75o like pena got but mets did not have he rated on their board that hig to warrant a bonus for that slot so stay tuned on that.arias, gerdon, and alavevez are all boras clients so thats also wait ad see.

the fo is expected to sign barfield within the next 5 to 10 days or he goes to juco and becomes a df.woodall is off the board and playing football at bama he wanted 2 to 3 million to sign mets willing to go to 1.5--1.75 and mulevy is getting bad advice from his agent in demanding 1 round money he most likly will have to come down on that demand and sign for lesser dolars or go back to college if so mets get compasention 2round pick next yr.

ok now for the CUBAN DEFECTION CRISIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ON july 1 when the ifa period began the mets had their board set on where they where gonna go,montro, pena, alverva, aris trifoinal, gerdon was their board and some lesser propects from venezula and d.r.

While at yankee stadium word got back to the mets high command from a new employee that mr.g was dropping hints of defecting but it was a packaage deal with his brother and father coming along, and that it will happen during the tourny at columbia. it sent the entire fo into a fucking M.I.4 movie.

word got to the wilpons who authorize everything needed to get mr.g.this is why we didnt understand the things the mets fo was doing during the solerimplosion the following night cuz of this situtaion and the roster being a mess and olver not being used and maines call up this is why everything went ape [CENSORED] that 2 day period so that now sheds light into that mess.

this news cuz the mets to reorg. their board and stragey for the ifa period pena became #1 and mr.g #2 and balbino #3 and anypitcher from the above group #4.money and favors in soth america where exchanged and 3 front office people and 1 scout where in columbia waiting for mr.g(fo people where from high command expect for omar who was with the team) they had 2 contracts one believed to be a 4yr deal worth 16 million and 5 yrs 21.25 million both where ml deals mr.g would be put on the 40 man roster after the season and be with team in spring training.

word got back that castro was diying (one of his sons is the cuban team trainer) and changed the whole outcome and thinking process of mr.g who may have firuge that if castro dies he wouldnt have to defect and can sign with a mlteam of his choice during the winter. So all the plans the mets have put in place to get mr.g went for nought and everyone in the org. ispiss that news of casrto health problems make it back to the team and changed mr.g mind and fucked up the mets plans of having t 2 FUCKING GREAT IFA SINGING PERIODS IN A ROW!!!!!!!!!!!!
so now we are playing catch up with everyone else but will sign some kids who will report to vsl,and dsl teams in less heralded signigs and hopefully get balibino and or alvervaz.mets scouts like triefuinel and project him as a hensel rameirez type player, others see him as a 5 tool outfieler once he fills up.

GUYS, I CHECKED WITH 2 DIFFERENT PEOPLE WITH THE TEAM FOR THIS INFO AND GOT THE SAME THING BACK BEFORE I POSTED THIS HERE!! SO THIS IS REAL AND LEGIT

DISCUSS
