to be fair, the play he made on opening day his first season in the bigs, where he made that throw home from his knees was one of the best i've ever seen in person.
also, let's not kid ourselves...despite some truly memorable years, it's not like we're talking about a long and storied franchise here. i probably can't come up with 50 players more deserving of "all time greatest mets" status. _________________

I don't even know if he's in the top 5 for shortstops overall...let alone top 50 overall players...he's probably in the top 50 over rated MLB players of all time, however... |

If you didn't see Rey play, you wouldn't see how huge he was to that team with the D.
Rey won three gold Gloves. Other than Hernandez, the Mets haven't had a player earn more than one in 44 years. _________________

I'd rate him 32d in Mets shortstops
1. Harrelson
2. Reyes
3. Ordonez
But I don't think that puts him in my top 50 (next post; will take some thought) |

I'd have to say in just a few years, Reyes has already surpassed Harrelson. |

Great defense, but putrid offense. Mets have had some pretty good players over the years (even if they found even greater success on another team). Not sure I would put Rey Rey in the top 50. I assume players who have only been with the Mets for one year or less (ie. Delgado, LoDuca) would not be eligible.
I'm sure I'm missing a bunch.

These are not in any particular order...
C) Piazza, Carter, Grote, Stearns, Hundley
1B) Hernandez, Olerud, Milner, Magadan, Kranepool
2B) Backman, Millan, Hunt, Alfonzo, Kent
SS) Harrelson, Reyes
3B) Wright, Hojo, Ventura
OF) Jones, McReynolds, Floyd, Foster, S.Henderson, Agee, Wilson, Dykstra, Strawberry. Staub, Swoboda, Bonilla
SP) Seaver, Gooden, Koosman, Cone, Darling, Fernandez, Leiter, Matlack
RP) McGraw, Orosco, Lockwood, Myers. Benitez, McDowell
That's 46. Okay I'll add Kingman, Bobby Jones, and Turk Wendell.
Anyone I can think of for #50 isn't a slam-dunk better than Rey=O. Whaddayaknow.
Of course, Beltran, Delgado, and Wagner will be upgrading the list soon. Not enough tenure as Mets yet.
quick trivia: which pitcher and position player have the longest current tenure as Mets?
Glavine & Jose |

Charlie, I'll grant Cameron, Franco, Reed, and Zeile to my list. Some of the others were one-season wonders even if they played more than one. |

No Saberhagen. I saw his Mets career. Nothing special except a good ERA.
Ojeda... great in 86, then hurt a lot. |

well whover fills out our lists, we've got more than 50 without Rey-O, which was the point. |

Saberhagen's peripherals were great throughout his tenure, especially 1994: 143K, 13BB (incredible)
I think in addition to 1986, 1988 cements Ojeda over Ordonez.
And Glavine's last three years should as well. _________________ “Once you start winning, ... you don't want to stop. You don't want to lose.” -Davey Johnson |
